CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO)-JOB REF: EHC/1772/2023.

Our client, the Kenya Sugar Manufacturers’ Association
(KESMA) based in Kisumu is a registered Association with the
Registrar of societies. The Association is registered with AFA
and the Sugar Directorate as the Apex Association of Sugar
Millers in Kenya. The mandate of KESMA is to bring together
sugar millers and advocate for their business interests across
the country.
KESMA is looking for a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to
deliver on this mandate.

Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Board of directors, the successful
candidate will oversee the management and provision of
strategic leadership to the secretariat and the membership
of the Association. The CEO’s responsibilities include
developing and implementing strategic plans, formulation
and implementation of company policies, maintaining open
dialogue with stakeholders and driving the Association’s
success. He/she will manage the day to day running of the
secretariat, develop strategies to grow the industry, lobby
and advocate for KESMA with the regulators, government
ministries and agencies, county governments, relevant
regional market and trading blocks in order to further the
interests of millers.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
1. As a CEO, be responsible for setting the direction and
strategy of KESMA in consultation with the Board.
2. Be the spokesman of the Association and be responsible
for Associations’ stakeholders engagement initiatives
3. Be responsible for the communication and execution of
Board strategy, decisions and policies.
4. Enhancing KESMA’s profile at national and regional level
while remaining engaged with local business community.
5. Be responsible for resource mobilization whilst ensuring
proper internal controls.
6. Provide inspirational and strategic leadership to the
secretariat to ensure individual potential is optimized.
7. Ensure that the Association’s internal processes, systems
and structures operate with utmost integrity.
8. As a CEO, be accessible, approachable and available to the
stakeholders of the Association
9. As a CEO and a vision carrier of the Association, be
conversant with the social, economic and political
operating environment.
10. As CEO of the Association, lobby with relevant government
ministries, departments and agencies to ensure that the
millers are guaranteed a supportive and enabling business
operating environment.
11. Initiate, develop and maintain co-operative and productive
relationships with other key stakeholders in the industry

Requirements and skills
• A bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture,
Agribusiness, Law or Business Management from a
recognized institution.
• A Master’s Degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agribusiness,
Law or Business Management, Public Administration, BBA
or MBA, International Development or related Human
service or Public Policy from a recognized institution will
be an added advantage.
• Demonstrate exposure to the agriculture sector, its value
chains, markets and market operations.
• Demonstrated capability in development and management
of strategic plans
• Demonstrated ability in stakeholder management and
representation
• Fiscal management & budgeting skills
• Familiarity with diverse business functions
• In depth knowledge of corporate governance and general
management best practices
• Analytical and problem solving skills
• High level communication and public speaking skills
• Ability to manage periodic local and international travel
• Knowledge of the sugar industry will be an added
advantage
