Job Description

JOB TITLE : RENAL/ NEPHROLOGY NURSE
REPORTS TO : RENAL NURSE INCHARGE
JOB LOCATION : PREMIER HOSPITAL
JOB PURPOSE
Ensure high-quality clinical care to all patients through provision of effective nursing services as a Renal Nursing Officer. Responsible for overseeing dialysis treatments required by patients suffering from acute or chronic kidney failure.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assessing, planning, implementing nursing interventions and evaluating patient's outcomes.
2. Reviews physician orders for dialysis patients, collect pre-treatment dialysis data, and reviews patient records prior to dialysis.
3. Conducts pre-dialysis patient assessment including obtaining patient vital signs and assessing the patient' s vascular access, laboratory findings, and the patient' s general health.
4. Verifies that patients are taking all prescribed medications and performs medication reconciliation.
5. Documents findings of patient assessments and interventions and advises providers of any significant change in the patient's condition and other pertinent information.
6. Monitors patient reaction to treatment and performance of the dialysis machines, and demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the mechanics of dialysis to ensure proper patient care.
7. Assesses, prepares, and cannulates a patient' s vascular access (including needle insertion in arteriovenous fistula or grafts for aseptic connection with dialysis equipment).
8. Utilizes sterile techniques to assess the dialysis catheter exit site and to apply dressing on the patient' s vascular access (dialysis catheter, arteriovenous access) per protocols.
9. Adhere to internal controls established for department.
10. Assist in the formulation, review and implementation of relevant policies and procedures e.g. infection prevention etc.
11. Adequately prepare and participate in health talks, presentations, and Continuous Medical Education (CME) events.
12. Participate in clinical audits.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS
• Diploma in any of the following. disciplines: Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing, Kenya Registered Nursing
• Higher Diploma in Nephrology Nursing;
• Experience - 3 years of experience in a busy renal unity or its equivalent
• Must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya with a Valid Practicing License
• Must have Valid ACLS/BLS certificates
• ETAT+ training will be an added advantage.
