Job Description

Africa-Re hereby announces the vacancy for the position of Claims Officer in her Nairobi Regional Office based in Nairobi, Kenya, at the Support Staff category.

Job Details
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate shall report to the Head of Claims and provide support to the claims function of the Regional office within the group overall policy & guidelines along with the service level of claims services.
The incumbent shall assure that all related aspects of above functions are handled in a professional and ethical manner and as per the Corporation’s policy and guidelines.

DUTIES / JOB DETAILS
Under the supervision of the Head of Claims, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
a) Review, processing, and settlement of claims per under Group Claims Underwriting Manual.
b) Preparation of claims memos for supervisor approval and follow up with Finance team to ensure timely settlement per internal turnaround times.
c) Review and acknowledge claims notification received from cedants and brokers.
d) Maintain proper records of all claims notification and follow up to logical conclusion.
e) Keep an audit trail of all reported claims.
f) Respond promptly and accurately to cedants and brokers queries.
g) Prompt processing of reported reinsurance claims recoveries and ensure reinsurance shares are correctly calculated.
h) Prepare claims files for management review and approvals.
i) Provide and deliver quality services to cedants and brokers.
j) Promptly process and monitor the development of the outstanding claims provision.
k) Generate and prepare progress claims reports (monthly/quarterly/annual) and any other management claim reports from the business objects reporting module of SICs system.
l) Prompt request of claims supporting documents from cedants and brokers such as policy wordings, adjuster’s reports, cession bordereaux, debit notes etc.
m) Review and timely processing of Cash Calls, as well as manage the follow up and reconciliation of cash call credit refunds.
n) Review, recommendation, and processing of loss reserves.
o) Review and flagging off contentious claims issues to supervisor such as wrong cessions to treaty/facultative contracts, liability attachment etc.
p) Maintenance of notified claims lists report and follow up with clients for reserves updates and documentation.
q) Review, monitoring, and processing of reinstatement premiums as well as maintenance of reports.
r) Monitoring and validation of adjustment premiums for prior years and following up to ensure they have been processed timeously.
s) Assistance on reconciliation of accounts on claims with outstanding premiums.
t) Follow up on salvages with clients.
u) Ability to train subordinates on claims processes.
v) Attending to any other duties as may be assigned by Supervisors and the Regional Management from time to time.

Location
JOB LOCATION
The successful candidate shall be initially based in Nairobi (Kenya) but could be later transferred in other geographical production centres of the Corporation.

Main Competencies
COMPETENCIES AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
a) Strong technical knowledge and experience in all the classes of insurance business (underwriting and claims).
b) Good knowledge and exposure to insurance and reinsurance markets.
c) Proven experience in handling reinsurance claims recoveries.
d) Practical knowledge of all types of reinsurance treaties and facultative arrangements.
e) Very good knowledge of proportional and non-proportional treaty contract wordings and how the relevant clauses affect the handling of reinsurance claim recoveries.
f) Stakeholder management particularly with key re/insurance claims professional service providers such as loss adjusters.
g) In-depth knowledge of appropriate insurance and reinsurance principles practices and laws applicable to different lines of business.
h) Strong analytical skills.
i) Excellent oral and written communication.
j) Capacity for analyzing, synthesizing and reasoning.
k) Negotiation and Presentation skills.
l) Problem-solving abilities with strong decision-making capability.
m) Keen attention to detail with an ability to retain strategic direction.
n) Ability to work with tight deadlines and handle volumes efficiently.
o) Ability to work without close supervision and within established timeframes.
p) Good use of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and knowledge of integrated business-related software will be an added advantage.
q) Practical knowledge of SICs reinsurance management system will be an added advantage.

Academic Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
• University Degree in any discipline related to the role, plus a minimum of 5 years’ practical work experience - particularly in claims management.
• Relevant work experience in a claims department of a reinsurance company or reinsurance and/or claims department of an insurance company is a must.
• Relevant Professional Qualification would be an added advantage.
• Relevant Working Exposure in a Multicultural Environment will be an added advantage.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The successful candidate shall have the following benefits:
a) Competitive Basic Salary on the Corporation’s Support Staff Grade Level.
b) Variable Pay (Annual Performance Bonus).
