Job Description

Program description: The Family Health Unit (FHU) is a section in the Kenya Medical Research
Institute (KEMRI) centre for global health research (CGHR). FHU conducts clinical and
epidemiological research focussing on maternal and child health. Ongoing research conducted within
FHU include the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) and Pregnancy
Surveillance platform studies that seek to collect high quality and accurate information on pregnancy
processes, complications encountered during pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, pregnancy risk
stratification. The project seeks to fill the following position.
Position : Registered Nurse J/G KMR 8 (2 positions)
Location : Kisumu
Reporting to : Research Administrator

Job specification:
The incumbent will be responsible for providing nursing care to study participants, conducting
antenatal, perinatal and post-natal care to mother and follow up for mother and baby pair. He/she will
participate in consenting study participants, taking histories, vital signs, physical examination,
anthropometrics, assist in conducting deliveries and management of patients. Coordinate referral of
pregnant women, enrolment and follow-ups. Collect high quality data for the study participants and
(with training) conduct simple ultrasound procedures on pregnant mothers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provides basic triage to study participants.
• Consenting, enrolment and follow-up of study participants
• Data collection from study participants.
• (With training) perform simple ultrasound procedures on study participants during ANC visits.
• Participate in antenatal, perinatal, and post-natal care of study participants.
• Diagnose danger signs of pregnancy and do appropriate referral.
• Assist with conduct of rapid HIV testing to study participants with pre and post-test counselling.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and participants’ privacy.
• Maintain adequate amounts of required clinic supplies.
• Ensures high quality accurate data collection and recording of confidential clinical data.
• Advice the study participants on availability of referral services.
• Develop in-depth understanding of the study design and goals for successful implementation
and execution of the study.
• Conduct health education on reproductive health services.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Person specification:
• Be in possession of diploma in nursing from a recognized institution.
• Be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya
• Have a valid practicing license from Nursing Council of Kenya

Skills & Abilities
• Computer literacy coupled with outstanding organizational and record keeping skills
• Attention to detail.
• Ability to work in a complex multidisciplinary group, especially in MOH set-up.
• Be a team player.
• Excellent written/oral communication, interpersonal and organization skills
• Fluency in both written and spoken English and Swahili.
