SENIOR REGISTERED NURSE-INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (ICU) –JOB GRADE, MTRH 9
(5 POSITIONS)
REF: MTRH/HR/04/08/2023

a) Job Purpose
Implement the Nursing Act, Cap 257 Revised Edition 2012 [1985]. Provide holistic, preventive,
curative, rehabilitative, palliative health care services and direct care using the nursing process
to meet health needs of clients/patients in life-threatening situations within the intensive care
unit at the Hospital. Collaborate with other members of the health care team in providing health
care interventions. Carry out research in ICU nursing health care. Maintain nursing records and
confidentiality of information relating to patients/clients. Provide safe patient care in a
conducive environment.

b) Responsibilities
Senior Registered Nurse (ICU) responsibilities include:
1. Monitoring exact, detailed reports and records of the critical ICU patients.
2. Monitoring and recording symptoms and changes in patients’ conditions and information
to the physician.
3. Ordering, interpreting and evaluating diagnostics tests to identify and assess the
patient’s condition.
4. Carefully observing and documenting patient medical information and vital signs.
5. Documenting patients’ medical histories and assessment findings.
6. Documenting patients’ treatment plans, interventions, outcomes, or plan revisions.
7. Consulting and coordinating with health care team members about whole patient care
plans.
8. Modifying patient treatment plans as indicated by patient’s response and conditions.
9. Monitoring the critical patients for changes in status and indications of conditions such
as sepsis or shock and institute appropriate interventions.
10. Administering intravenous fluids and medications as per doctor’s order.
11. Monitoring patients’ fluid intake and output to detect emerging problems such as fluid
and electrolyte imbalances.
12. Monitoring all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
13. Identifying patients who are at risk of complications due to nutritional status.
14. Treating wounds and providing advanced life support.
15. Assisting physicians with procedures such as bronchoscopy, endoscopy, endotracheal
intubation, and elective cardioversion.
16. Ensuring that ventilator, monitors, and other types of medical equipment function
properly.
17. Ensuring that equipment or devices are properly stored after use.
18. Identifying malfunctioning equipment or devices.
19. Collaborating with fellow members of the critical care team.
20. Responding to life-saving situations, using nursing standards and protocols for
treatment.
21. Caring for pre-and post-operative patients requiring ICU care.
22. Assessing patients’ pain levels and sedation requirements.
23. Prioritizing nursing care for assigned critically ill patients based on assessment data and
identified needs.
24. Assessing family adaptation levels and coping skills to determine whether intervention is
needed.
25. Acting as a patient advocate.
26. Providing education and support to patient families.
27. ICU nurses must be able to draw ABG Blood and interpret the report correctly.
28. ICU nurses should have enough knowledge about GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale) and also
the evaluation capacity of patient condition.

c) Minimum Requirements
For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:
i. Served in the grade of Registered Nurse for a minimum period of five (5) years or in a
comparable position.
ii. Diploma in any of the following disciplines: Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing,
Kenya Registered Nursing, Kenya Registered Midwifery, Kenya Registered Nursing/Mental
Health and Psychiatric from a recognized institution.
iii. Higher Diploma in Critical Care Nursing from a recognized institution.
iv. Registration certificate issued by the Nursing Council of Kenya.
v. 2023 Practising license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
vi. Proficiency in computer applications.
